There is no official rule book.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Still, most people land on the same basic recipe: American-made, two-door, mid-size platform (or a chassis shared with a regular family car), big-displacement V8 (typically 5 liters or more), rear-wheel drive, affordable when it was new, and built to run the quarter mile. <\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/autos.yahoo.com\/\">autos.yahoo.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">That last part matters. A muscle car was never supposed to be a scalpel. It was a sledgehammer.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Take a mid-size car your dad might have driven to work, drop in the biggest V8 the factory would allow, and sell it cheap enough that a young buyer could walk into a dealership and take one home. Straight-line speed first. Handling was a bonus if you got any.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/musclecarsillustrated.com\/\">musclecarsillustrated.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">A little history helps settle the argument, even if it never fully ends. Some folks point to the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 as the first one.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Others start with the 1955 Chrysler 300. Most people treat 1964 as year one, when Pontiac stuffed a 389 into a mid-size Tempest\/LeMans and called it the GTO.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">After that, everybody piled on: Chevelle SS, Olds 442, Buick GS, Dodge Charger, Plymouth Road Runner, Ford Torino. The golden window is roughly 1964 to 1972.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Insurance rates, emissions rules, and the gas crisis killed the original formula after that.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/forbes.com\/\">forbes.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Pony cars like the Mustang and Camaro are often included even if they started smaller and more compact. A base six-cylinder Mustang is a pony car.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">A 428 Cobra Jet Mustang or a COPO Camaro has the muscle. Sports cars like the Corvette usually get excluded because they prioritize handling, weight balance, and cornering over brute acceleration.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">A Corvette can be viciously fast. That does not automatically make it a muscle car.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/motorious.com\/\">motorious.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/musclecarclub.com\/muscle-car-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muscle Car\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; color: #000000; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/musclecarclub.com\/muscle-car-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Must-Haves:\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/musclecarclub.com\/muscle-car-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It\u00a0must have<\/a><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ol><li><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">only two doors.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">It must have a powerful V8.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">It must be a mid-size car.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">It must be American-made.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">It must be rear-wheel drive.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">As long as it meets the criteria above, most people would call it a muscle car. You can argue the edges all day. A four-door 2000s Charger? Some say yes, some say no.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">A Hellcat Challenger? Most people say yes. A compact with a turbo four and all-wheel drive? That is something else wearing stripes.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Classic examples of the formula are easy to name: Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Chevelle SS, Dodge Charger R\/T, Plymouth Road Runner, Oldsmobile 442, Buick GS, Ford Torino Cobra.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">The high-output pony cars sit right on the line and usually get a pass when they have the big engine: Mustang GT, Boss, and Shelby; Camaro SS, Z\/28, and COPO; Barracuda and Challenger when they were packing 440s and Hemis.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">I am a big fan of making it your car, even if that means you don\u2019t keep it 100% factory original. Headers, a cam, better brakes, a decent set of wheels \u2014 that is how a lot of these cars actually got used. Drive them. Enjoy them.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">A clean driver with a few honest upgrades is more fun than a trailer queen you are afraid to start.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Obviously, if it is a special car like an L88 or L71 Corvette, a Mustang GT350, a Yenko Camaro, or a COPO Camaro, well, you get the idea. There are certain cars you shouldn\u2019t modify for value\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Those cars are very rare, and you almost never see one of them in the wild. Leave the unicorns alone. Everything else is fair game.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">Modern cars muddy the water again, and that is fine. The last-generation Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang carried the idea forward with huge V8s and rear-wheel drive, even if they were heavier, safer, and more refined than a 1970 Chevelle.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;\">The Mustang is the one that is still in production in that spirit. Call the hottest versions muscle if you want. This is a loaded question; the answer really is: what are you buying the car for?<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>Are you planning to drive the car or use it as an investment? These are two wildly different things. I buy them to drive, not sit and look pretty. I understand the idea of investing in them.\u00a0<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>I\u2019m not saying one is better than the other. It depends 100% on you and why you\u2019re buying the car. That being said, this article is a list of the first 5 of 10 cars to invest in. First-choice cars stay expensive because demand never really cooled, and the cheap ones are cheap for a reason.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>I will write a list of 10 cars over two days, five cars each day. This should be a fun list of ultra-cool muscle cars to invest in. Rust, mice, seized brakes, a title in a coffee can \u2014 originality is the prize, even when the prize is ugly. Still want to put money into American muscle?<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>Buy the car, not the auction-night story. Paperwork beats stripes. A survivor beats a clone. A $40,000 restoration on a $35,000 car is not an investment.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>It\u2019s a hobby with a receipt. Here are the first five. They still have a real market under them in 2026. Not lottery tickets. Cars people actually fight over.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6<\/h2><p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>This heavyweight bruiser can hold its own against any muscle car as far as an investment. Chevrolet put a solid-lifter cam in the LS6 and built about 4,475 of them. It was a race car sold with a warranty; it sported a 454 CID rated at 450 HP, and there was. Hagerty\u2019s Good-condition LS6 454 will go well into the six-digit range. This is all about the numbers. But that is not what my research says.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>The GSX Stage 1 sported a big mean 455 CID big-block Buick. That was truly one of the most potent muscle car engines ever built.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>Holding the record for the most torque in any muscle car until 1992, when Dodge released the Viper. Movies did that. Hemi cars are already in the land of testosterone-fueled apes with more money than God.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>The Dodge Charger R\/T 440 is a car that the regular collector can still afford to buy. Excellent 440 R\/T cars live in the high five and low six figures; it\u2019s a great place to start collecting. The 1968 \u2013 1970 Charger is my favorite body style. I am admittedly more of a GM guy, but Mopar pulls a strong second place. The 340 and 383 cars are the smart-money play: same long-hood shape, same shaker if you get the right one, and a price that is still a fraction of the elephant-motor cars.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>First of all you\u2019d be lucky to find a real \u201cHemi\u201d a car that is documented and a matter of fact car.
