If you\u2019re shopping for a first-generation Camaro and someone claims it\u2019s a 1969 Z\/28, take your time. These cars were built as Trans-Am racers in street clothes, and only about 20,300 left the factory that year. Because they\u2019re valuable now, plenty of regular Camaros have been turned into look-alikes. Here\u2019s how to tell the real ones from the pretenders in a straightforward way. Begin with the VIN plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver\u2019s side. It must start with 12437 \u2014 that\u2019s the code for the sport coupe body style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Z\/28s were never offered as convertibles, so anything with a 12467 is not original. The third digit should be a 4 (V8), and the seventh character will be either an N (Norwood, Ohio plant) or an L (Van Nuys, California plant). The VIN won\u2019t spell out \u201cZ\/28,\u201d but it confirms you\u2019re looking at a legitimate 1969 Camaro coupe. Next, open the hood and locate the cowl tag on the firewall, driver\u2019s side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This small metal plate is one of the best authenticity clues. It should list body style 12437. On Norwood-built cars made after mid-December 1968, you\u2019ll usually see an X33 or X77 code. X33 cars had the optional deluxe trim package; X77 cars had the standard trim. Van Nuys cars don\u2019t carry these X codes, so you\u2019ll need stronger proof from other areas. Check the build date on the tag too \u2014 it should roughly match what the seller claims. The engine tells the real story. Every authentic 1969 Z\/28 left the factory with a 302 cubic-inch small-block V8. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look for the engine code stamped on the front pad of the block on the passenger side \u2014 it must end in DZ. The partial VIN stamped on the block should match the last digits of the car\u2019s VIN. Correct block casting numbers (visible on the rear of the block, driver\u2019s side) are 3932386, 3956618, or 3970010. Real Z\/28 engines also came with specific parts like a Winters aluminum intake manifold and a Holley four-barrel carburetor. No air conditioning was available on these cars from the factory. On the outside, check the badges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genuine Z\/28s wear \u201cZ\/28\u201d emblems on the front fenders (instead of the usual engine-size badge), the grille, and often the rear panel. They have the signature dual wide racing stripes across the hood and deck lid \u2014 though some owners deleted them when new. The optional cowl-induction \u201cSuper Scoop\u201d hood (ZL2) appeared mid-year and is a nice bonus if it\u2019s original. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should also see 15×7 Rally wheels and rear bumper guards, which were part of the Z\/28 package. Underneath, the car should have a four-speed manual transmission only \u2014 no automatics or three-speeds on factory Z\/28s. Power front disc brakes were mandatory with the package, along with the heavy-duty F41 suspension and quick-ratio steering. Finally, ask to see the paperwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An original Protect-O-Plate, broadcast sheet, or window sticker can confirm the options ordered. Many tags and plates get reproduced these days, so everything needs to line up. Take your time and check each area carefully. If the engine code is wrong, the transmission is automatic, or the numbers don\u2019t match, it\u2019s probably a clone or heavily modified car. Real 1969 Z\/28s reward patient buyers with solid value and that raw, high-revving driving experience that made them legends in the first place.
