We<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> have all heard of the muscle car horsepower wars. They never really ended, even after the 1970s gas crisis, insurance hikes, and emissions rules tried to kill them. People loved how these cars looked, how they sounded, and most of all how they performed. Owners drove them hard and had fun doing it. That combination of affordable power, aggressive styling, and cultural timing is what made muscle cars famous.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>The magazines even printed a mock tombstone that read something like \u201cBorn 1955 \u2013 Died 1976.\u201d They were wrong. The American muscle car survived.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Most<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0historians point to the 1964 Pontiac GTO as the spark. Pontiac engineer John DeLorean dropped a 389-cubic-inch V8 into a mid-size Tempest and offered it as an option package. General Motors had unofficially banned big engines in intermediate cars. Pontiac ignored the rule and sold more than 32,000 GTOs the first year. Other manufacturers immediately copied the formula: big V8 in a relatively light two-door body, sold at a price young buyers could actually reach. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Cheap gasoline, a booming economy, and a generation that wanted speed did the rest.
