Barn find, time capsule, survivor — they are not the same thing

A barn find is a car that disappeared into a building, a lean-to, a warehouse, or a grove of trees and came back looking like it lost an argument with the 1970s.

Rust, mice, seized brakes, a title in a coffee can. Originality is the prize, even when the prize is ugly.

A time capsule is rarer. Someone put it away on purpose and left it alone. Low miles. Original paint that still smells like a dealership.

Registration in the glove box. Sometimes a tank of gas that turned to varnish in 1984.

The Ballon collection in France — sixty cars sleeping on a farm, including a Ferrari California Spider that later brought about $18.5 million — is the extreme version of that dream.

So is the 977-mile DeLorean pulled from a Wisconsin barn.

So is every 12,000-mile big-block that still has the window sticker folded in the owner’s manual.

1969 Rust-free Camaro

Last but not least is number 3: 1970 Buick GSX Stage 2. The last one of these

I saw commanded a price tag of $680,000, and this wasn’t at an auction where a couple or three testosterone-fueled apes with more money than God bid the car to the moon, which is the job of an auctioneer.

No, this was on a used car lot.

This car held the highest torque spec with 510 FTLB until Dodge released the Viper in 1992. You have got to admit that’s impressive.
